Authorities sent more than 100 first responders to the site in the city’s Wilmington neighborhood. Officials said there were no significant injuries.

Thirty-one workers were rescued after they were trapped inside an industrial tunnel in Los Angeles that collapsed on Wednesday night, officials said.

All of the tunnel workers emerged safely and there were no significant injuries after the collapse happened about five miles from the tunnel’s only access point, said Michael Chee, the spokesman for Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said that it had dispatched more than 100 rescue workers to the site in the city’s neighborhood of Wilmington, about 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

The tunnel was part of a $630 million wastewater management project commissioned by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, expected to be completed in 2027.

FlatironDragados, the project’s main contractor, said on its website that the seven-mile tunnel would transport water from a treatment plant to the Pacific Ocean and allow repairs to aging infrastructure elsewhere.

Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles said on social media that she was being briefed on the emergency at the scene.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
