President Donald Trump sought to clean up his recent comments Tuesday regarding Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, telling reporters at the White House that he has “no intention” of firing him.

Earlier this month, Powell suggested in a speech before the Economic Club of Chicago that the president’s tariff agenda will lead the Fed to hold off on any significant change to interest rates.

Trump, in turn, ratcheted up his own public attacks on “Too Late” Powell, suggesting repeatedly on Truth Social that he was considering removing the chairman from his post before the conclusion of his term in 2026.

The president, while fielding a question in the Oval Office Tuesday evening during a swearing-in ceremony for Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Paul Atkins, claimed to be making significant progress in lowering prices for American households, adding that the “Fed should lower the rate” to help decrease borrowing costs.

“We think that it’s a perfect time to lower the rate, and would like to see our chairman be early or on time, as opposed to late,” he continued before clarifying he has “no intention of firing” Powell.

“None whatsoever. Never did. The press runs away with things,” Trump continued. “No, I have no intention of firing him. I would like to see him be a little more active in terms of his idea to lower interest rates. It’s the perfect time to lower interest rates.”

“If he doesn’t, is it the end? No, it’s not, but it would be good timing — it could have taken place earlier, but no, I have no intention of firing him,” the president concluded.
