President Donald Trump is expected to announce on Monday that Washington, D.C., will host the 2027 NFL draft.
The district last held the NFL draft in 1941, and it was largely held in New York City until the last decade.
Trump will announce the event alongside NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Commanders owner Josh Harris. The event in Washington will come after Pittsburgh holds the event in 2026. Detroit and Green Bay held the draft in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
The event usually brings millions of dollars to the region where it is held and generates significant buzz. The draft is expected to be held on the National Mall.
The announcement of the large sports event comes after the Washington Commanders said last week they would be moving back to the district, occupying the abandoned RFK Stadium grounds after a $4.7 billion redevelopment of the area. But the stadium isn’t set to open until 2030.
Goodell said a new stadium would raise the district’s chances of hosting a Super Bowl “dramatically.”
“I didn’t come here to announce that, but I would say dramatically,” he said during an event.
“I really do think this community could be a great host for a Super Bowl. The [new] stadium is always the missing piece,” he said.

The Commanders franchise hasn’t won a Super Bowl since 1992, though it went to the AFC championship game earlier this year. The Washington area has never hosted a Super Bowl.
The NFL draft is an annual gathering in which the league’s 32 NFL franchises select new players to play for their teams. Miami quarterback Cam Ward went first overall to the Tennessee Titans in the 2025 NFL draft.
