FROM whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. James 4:1-4

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s trolling of President Donald Trump has drawn criticism from conservative commentators, who warn that the governor’s online antics could backfire.

On Fox News’s The Five, former White House press secretary Dana Perino urged Newsom to take his role more seriously, calling his flurry of all-caps social media posts “foolish” and unbecoming of a governor with national ambitions.

“You have to stop it with the Twitter thing,” Perino said, referring to Newsom’s slew of posts on X, formerly Twitter. “If I were his wife, I would say you are making a fool of yourself, stop it… He’s got a big job as governor of California, but if he wants an even bigger job, he has to be a little more serious.”

Perino’s remarks come as Newsom continues to mock Trump by mimicking his caps-heavy, insult-laden posting style on X, even adopting Trump’s trademark nicknames such as “Tiny Hands” and “Low IQ.”

In one post Friday, Newsom’s press team responded to a photo of Trump scowling at Russian President Vladimir Putin by sharing their own photo of Newsom pointing at Trump earlier this year: “TINY HANDS IS OUT HERE COPYING ME — BUT WITHOUT THE STAMINA (SAD), AND CERTAINLY WITHOUT THE ‘LOOKS.’ TOTAL BETA! — GCN,” the account wrote.

Another post accused Trump of fleeing the podium after his meeting with Putin, mocking his energy level: “TRUMP JUST FLED THE PODIUM WITH PUTIN — NO QUESTIONS, NOTHING! TOTAL LOW ENERGY. THE MAN LOOKED LIKE HE’D JUST EATEN 3 BUCKETS OF KFC WITH VLAD.”

The trolling tied directly into Newsom’s rollout of Democratic-drawn redistricting maps in California, which he has branded as “perfect maps” to counter Texas Republicans’ push to redraw congressional districts in their favor.

In a separate post, Newsom’s team claimed he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for his redistricting efforts.

“MANY PEOPLE ARE SAYING — AND I AGREE — THAT I, GAVIN C. NEWSOM (AMERICA’S FAVORITE GOVERNOR) DESERVE THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE,” the account wrote. “PEACE THROUGH MAPS — NO ONE HAS EVER THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE.”

The theatrics drew amusement from some Democratic activists, including former FBI Director James Comey, but Perino’s critique underscores how critics see Newsom’s strategy as risky for someone eyeing a future White House run.

Newsom’s trolling coincides with major developments in the redistricting fight. On Monday, Texas Democrats ended a two-week walkout that had temporarily stalled GOP efforts to pass new maps in that state. Republican leaders are expected to move quickly to lock in their advantage before the 2026 midterm elections.

Newsom framed California’s maps as a direct response, positioning himself as a foil to Trump and Texas Republicans.

The California governor has repeatedly clashed with Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Last month, he mocked Vance’s Disneyland trip during federal immigration raids in California.

Vance shot back with a curt reply: “Had a great time, thanks.”

The episode highlighted how Newsom’s trolling has become a centerpiece of his new national political identity in the lead-up to the 2028 presidential election.
