President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he was prepared for a legal fight with Lisa Cook, the Federal Reserve governor the president announced he would be firing Monday night.
Trump set his sights on Cook late last week after reports indicated that she might have carried out fraud by claiming multiple properties as her primary residence on mortgage applications. Cook has not been investigated or charged with any crimes. Furthermore, she said Tuesday morning that she would not resign from her post and would remain as a governor through the conclusion of her term, which began in 2022.
Cook and her legal team announced Tuesday morning that she would be filing a lawsuit over her termination, claiming that the president is attempting to fire her without cause. Asked about the lawsuit during his Tuesday marathon Cabinet meeting, Trump told reporters that he was ready to meet Cook in court.
“You always have legal fights,” Trump said when asked if he was prepared for the suit. “I had a legal fight that went on for years with crooked people, with very horrible people.”
“She seems to have had an infraction, and she can’t have an infraction, especially that infraction, because she’s in charge of, if you think about it, mortgages,” he continued. “We need people that are 100% above board, and it doesn’t seem like she was.”
Still, the Federal Reserve said in a statement that it will abide by the court’s decision on the matter, and Trump indicated he would do the same Tuesday morning despite his rhetoric on Cook.
“I abide by the court, yeah, I abide by the court,” the president told reporters.
