President Donald Trump on Tuesday offered a candid and humorous glimpse into his private conversations with first lady Melania Trump, revealing that she strongly disapproves of two habits he’s famous for, particularly at rallies: dancing onstage and mimicking weightlifters.

Speaking during an address to Republican lawmakers, Donald Trump said his wife believes both behaviors are “unpresidential,” even as crowds enthusiastically respond to them.

“My wife hates when I do this,” Trump said, referring to his onstage antics. “She’s a very classy person. She said, ‘It’s so unpresidential.’ I said, ‘But I did become president.’”

The president has frequently danced at campaign events, often to the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” or Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless The U.S.A.,” drawing cheers from supporters. But according to him, the first lady remains unconvinced.

“She hates when I dance,” he said. “[She said,] ‘Darling, it’s not presidential.’ She actually said, ‘Can you imagine FDR dancing?’”

President Trump referenced former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as part of the exchange, noting that while Roosevelt was “an elegant fellow,” he likely wouldn’t have danced onstage either. Still, the president joked that his wife may underestimate how much supporters enjoy it.

“She said, ‘They don’t like it, they’re just being nice to you,’” he recalled. “I said, ‘That’s not right. The place goes crazy.’”

The president’s comments came as he segued into a broader discussion about transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, a topic he has repeatedly raised on the campaign trail. Trump argued that biological differences make such competition unfair, and said his wife is especially displeased when he physically imitates weightlifters to illustrate the point.

“She said, ‘Darling, please, the weightlifting is terrible,’” Trump said.

The first lady has come to the limelight again as Amazon MGM Studios prepares to release a feature-length documentary about her life. The film, Melania, will debut exclusively in theaters on Jan. 30 in the United States and select international markets.

The documentary follows Melania Trump during the 20 days leading up to the president’s 2025 inauguration. It will be accompanied by a three-part docuseries expanding on her background, public role, and transition into the White House. The project is expected to bring increased attention to the first lady in the weeks surrounding its theatrical release.
