A satirical social media post suggesting a royal marriage as a solution to United States-Greenland tensions has gone viral, drawing millions of views as debate continues over America’s interest in acquiring the Arctic island.

The post, shared by an X account called “Miss White,” proposed what it called “the simple diplomatic solution” to Greenland negotiations: a marriage between Barron Trump, the youngest son of President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump, and Princess Isabella of Denmark, a member of the Danish royal family.

“The simple diplomatic solution is Barron Trump marries Princess Isabella of Denmark and Greenland is given to America as dowry payment,” the post read, alongside side-by-side photos of the two young figures.

Since being shared on Jan. 7, the post has been viewed close to 10 million times, with thousands more weighing in through comments and reposts.

Some X users leaned into the humor of the proposal.

“Modern problems require ancient solutions,” one person quipped.

“When they get divorced, does she get half of America?” another joked.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark since the 18th century, though it maintains its own local government and parliament. Denmark retains authority over the island’s defense, foreign policy, and economic matters.

Despite the Trump administration’s renewed interest in Greenland, both Danish and Greenlandic leaders have repeatedly emphasized that it is not for sale.

Historically, Denmark was also the last country to sell territory to the U.S.

In 1917, the U.S. purchased the Danish West Indies, now known as the U.S. Virgin Islands, for $25 million in gold, largely for strategic and military reasons to protect Caribbean shipping routes during World War I.

Trump first floated the idea of acquiring Greenland during his first term in 2019. In a joint address to Congress on March 4, 2025, he said the U.S. would obtain the territory “one way or another,” citing national security concerns.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reinforced his country’s position this week, saying that if forced to choose, Greenlanders would remain aligned with Denmark rather than the U.S.

“If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark,” Nielsen said at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen.

Frederiksen has warned that any attempt to seize Greenland by force would threaten NATO’s unity, calling U.S. pressure “completely unacceptable.”

The strategic island sits between North America and the Arctic, making it a key location for missile defense and regional monitoring. The U.S. already operates a military base in northwestern Greenland and is allowed to increase troop presence under existing agreements with Denmark.

Still, Trump has argued that ownership, not leasing, is necessary for security, claiming the region is increasingly influenced by Russia and China.

Meanwhile, diplomatic talks are set to continue. Denmark’s and Greenland’s foreign ministers are scheduled to meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House on Wednesday.

While the viral marriage proposal was meant to be satire, it has captured attention during a tense moment in U.S.–Danish relations, highlighting how the Greenland debate has spilled beyond politics and into internet culture.

Barron, 19, has largely remained out of the public spotlight, with his personal life kept private. Princess Isabella, 18, is the daughter of King Frederik X and Queen Mary, and is second in line to the Danish throne after her older brother, Crown Prince Christian.

There has been no indication that Barron or Princess Isabella will be involved in White House talks with Denmark and Greenland on Wednesday.
