The Trump administration announced a program on Monday to increase the number of young federal employees with a new Generation Z hiring initiative.
The White House and U.S. Office of Personnel Management rolled out the campaign, with officials saying it comes as the federal government is “massively under-indexed” on young talent by a 3-1 margin.
“Building a strong pipeline of early-career talent is essential to the future of the federal workforce,” Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor said in a press release. “We are making it easier for talented individuals to connect with meaningful careers in public service while helping agencies efficiently identify the talent they need to deliver results for the American people.”
OPM is looking to address the gap by launching a cross-agency, early-career talent network that emphasizes five job categories officials hope will attract young federal employees: finance, human resources, engineering, project management, and procurement.

In a blog post detailing the initiative, Kupor said roughly 7% of the federal workforce is under 30, compared with about 22% in the non-government workforce.
“We are creating a system where individuals are hired based on demonstrated talent, not one based on where/whether they went to college or how long they have been in a job,” Kupor wrote.
