In almost every high-profile federal and statewide contest this year, the frontrunners did not just edge out their opponents…they cleared that 30% hurdle with room to spare, effectively canceling the run-offs for those seats. 

1. The U.S. Senate Matchup: Whatley vs. Cooper 

The race to succeed Thom Tillis is now a locked-in heavyweight battle. 

• The Results: Former RNC Chair Michael Whatley secured the Republican nomination with 64.6% of the vote, while former Governor Roy Cooper dominated the Democratic field with a massive 92%. 

• Latest News: Within the last 24 hours, both campaigns have pivoted fully to General Election messaging. Cooper is leaning into a “Make Stuff Cost Less” platform, targeting anti-trust enforcement in grocery retail. Whatley is reinforcing his “Trump Champion” status, focusing on public safety and high-tech border solutions…a message that resonates with your interest in high-performance tech like the Samsung/Pixel ecosystem you utilize. 

• Consequences: There is no May 12 run-off for the Senate. Both parties have their “titans” in place, setting the stage for what experts predict will be the most expensive Senate race in NC history. 

2. Congressional “Incumbent Dominance” 

The primary results for the U.S. House were equally decisive: 

• District 1: Laurie Buckhout (R) avoided a run-off by hitting 39.5%, defeating Asa Buck. She will face incumbent Democrat Don Davis.

3. The Recount Drama: State Senate District 26  

The only true “cliffhanger” left from the March primary is in the state legislature. The GOP primary between Sam Page and Phil Berger Jr. (the State Senate President Pro Tem’s son) saw Page win by a razor-thin margin (50.04% to 49.96%). 

• Status Update: As of April 23, a machine recount is proceeding. While Berger Jr. requested a hand recount, the State Board of Elections rejected that request last week. This remains the most watched “local” news item, as it represents a significant internal power shift within the state’s Republican leadership.

Because the run-offs were largely avoided, both parties in North Carolina now have an extra six weeks to fundraise and sharpen their General Election messaging compared to 2024.
