Leavitt heads to maternity leave and jokes reporters can just call Trump

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is set to go on maternity leave next week to give birth to her second child.

But before signing off, Leavitt joked with reporters about President Donald Trump’s penchant for taking calls from journalists at all times of the day.

“On a personal matter, this will likely be my last gaggle for some time,” Leavitt said to journalists Friday afternoon. “As you can see, I’m about ready to have a baby any minute, so I will see you guys very soon.”

“I know you’ll be in very good hands with my team here at the White House. And I know all of you have the president’s phone number personally,” she continued, eliciting laughter from the journalists gathered at the White House.

Since the Iran war began on Feb. 28, Trump has spoken to dozens of reporters, including the Washington Examiner‘s Christian Datoc, about the U.S. strategy to deprive Iran of nuclear power capabilities.

During Leavitt’s absence, several officials are expected to hold press briefings with reporters, including Vice President JD Vance and even Trump himself, while white House communications director Steven Cheung will manage the press team.

Leavitt shares a son, Niko, with husband Nicholas Riccio. She returned to the Trump campaign in July 2024, days after that maternity leave began, due to the assassination attempt on the president in Butler, Pennsylvania.
