Christians Keep Ignoring This Command – And It’s Costing Them Peace

By Dave Blaze

Philippians 4:5-7 says, “Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

This passage makes something very clear: worry isn’t harmless. Scripture treats anxiety the same way it treats any other sin…it’s something God tells His children not to entertain. That means we can’t shrug it off as “just how I am” or “just a weakness.” The more we recognize that worry is a form of unbelief, the more we’ll see how it dishonors God…and the more seriously we’ll fight against it (Hebrews 12:4).

So how do we actually “strive against” worry?

We start by catching it early. The moment you feel your mind getting pulled into fear or “what if” thinking, turn to God immediately. Ask Him to pull you out of it. Don’t wait until the anxiety grows roots…interrupt it at the beginning.

One of the strongest weapons against worry is meditating often on who God is…His goodness, His power, His faithfulness, His sufficiency. When a believer can confidently say, “The Lord is my Shepherd,” then the next part naturally follows: “I shall not want.” If He is your Shepherd, lack cannot rule your life.

Then Paul gives the next step:

But in every thing by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God.”

That phrase “with thanksgiving” is huge…and it’s where many of us fall short. It means we thank God before the answer comes. It’s the confidence of a child who knows their Father is going to respond with grace. Thanksgiving is faith in action.

Jesus reinforces this same teaching in Matthew 6:25-33: “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?”

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Jesus is saying: Don’t let your life be driven by anxiety about basic needs. God already knows what you require. Your job is to seek Him first…He handles the rest.

And here’s the final encouragement:

Nothing is too big for God to handle, and nothing is too small for Him to care about.
Bring everything…every fear, every need, every concern…to your great God and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He invites you to cast it all on Him.

Ephesians 1:13 shares a powerful promise. It explains that you are saved and securely sealed the very moment you hear and believe the word of truth, which is the good news of your salvation.

That same message of truth is available to you right now: “that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. Choose to believe this today. Life moves fast, and there is no better time to find that security than right now.
