Library of Congress celebrates America 250 with massive birthday cake

An America 250 spokesperson told the Washington Examiner that the cake was 4 feet by 6 feet. Staying true to its American roots, whole-wheat flour from George Washington’s gristmill at Mount Vernon was used to make it.

The tribute to America 250 showcased contributions from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories.

The spokesperson said only a portion of the cake was edible, since it will be going on display.

The cake was also made with Vermont butter, currants soaked in Kentucky bourbon, cardamom, thyme-infused honey, sautéed Granny Smith apple slices, and Swiss buttercream frosting.

Its design incorporates contributions from bipartisan members of Congress “representing every state and territory, alongside artwork from student winners of America’s Field Trip,” the statement said. 

The contributions included Alaska’s Iditarod, Indiana’s IndyCar heritage, Guam’s proa boat, Maryland’s blue crab, and West Virginia’s New River Gorge Bridge.

In addition to the contributions made from private donors, a historical consultation was provided by the Smithsonian Institution and Colonial Williamsburg.

The celebration included remarks from Pak, America250 VP of Government Relations Tom Jensen, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), and Rep. Rudy Yakym (R-IN).

The first pieces of cake from the ceremonial cake cutting were presented to two young scouts, Tiger Scout Harrison Yang and Daisy Scout Anneke Ziemke.

The National Birthday Cake Tribute will be on public display at the White House Visitor Center from July 7 through August 2.
