White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is set to return to the podium on Thursday after taking months of leave for the birth of her second child.
Leavitt is briefing reporters at the White House on Thursday afternoon, according to the White House schedule, when she will likely field questions about Iran, the midterm elections, and President Donald Trump’s primetime speech to the nation that evening, among other issues.
The development comes as Leavitt has been away from podium duties since starting her leave in late April.
The press secretary welcomed her baby girl, Viviana, in May and resumed some work duties in late June. Leavitt and her husband, Nick, tied the knot in January 2025, just days before Trump’s inauguration. She is the first pregnant White House press secretary in U.S. history and also the youngest at 28 years old.
Leavitt held her final press briefing before maternity leave on April 24, telling reporters she would return “very soon” to the podium.
Prominent officials ranging from Vice President JD Vance to Secretary of State Marco Rubio filled in to replace her during White House press briefings conducted in her absence.

“I told Karoline I would stand in for her today for the White House press briefing on the condition that when Usha has our baby in July, she would be vice president for a couple of weeks,” Vance joked in May, referencing his wife’s pregnancy with their fourth child.
Leavitt’s maternity leave was briefly broken when she returned to the podium on April 27 to address the shooting at the White House correspondents’ dinner, where a shooter was charged with attempting to assassinate Trump.
