EXCLUSIVE — MAHA-aligned lawmakers in close reelection campaigns are being helped by Trump administration alumni before November’s midterm elections after their support for a uniform national standard for ingredient transparency.
Americans for Ingredient Transparency, a coalition of policy experts, farmers, and business leaders, announced on Wednesday a “seven-figure” media campaign to “praise and encourage congressional action” by House and Senate lawmakers regarding national ingredient transparency standards.
“The moment for Congress to act is now,” said Andy Koenig, a former Trump administration official affiliated with the group. “American families are already feeling the pinch at the supermarket, and a patchwork of conflicting state laws, if left unaddressed, will drive prices even higher. We are grateful for the leadership of the policymakers who are working to keep groceries affordable by advancing a national uniform ingredient standard and encourage the rest of Congress to join the effort.”
The money will go both into ads and grassroots activism aimed at bolstering Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Jon Husted (R-OH), and Roger Marshall (R-KS). AFIT is also spending to boost Reps. Kat Cammack (FL-03) and Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01). The campaign will start in mid-August.
For example, Husted is, on average, in a statistical tie with former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) three months before Election Day, at least according to RealClearPolitics.
Th ad buy underscores the MAHA movement’s political power when traditionally conservatives have been against more government regulation.
“The campaign comes as a growing patchwork of state ingredient regulations threatens to increase grocery costs by 12% for the average American household if a national standard is not enacted,” an AFIT spokeswoman told the Washington Examiner. “The creative in this campaign will illustrate that policymakers who support a national standard will prevent price hikes on their constituents at the grocery store at a time when affordability is top of mind for all Americans.”
The House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing in April on the FRESH and Affordable Foods Act, which would create national uniformity for ingredient transparency.
TRUMP HAS SOURED ON JEANINE PIRRO, BUT SHE CAN STILL SAVE HER JOB
In an interview with Bloomberg last December, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the pseudo-leader of the MAHA movement, expressed support for a national food standard “that is working for the states and working for the federal government, and that works for industry.”
“They don’t want to have rules in 50 different markets – that’s impossible,” he said.
