Trump announces Ed Martin will leave DOJ to fight election ‘legal battles’
President Donald Trump announced Friday that U.S. pardon attorney Ed Martin will leave the Justice Department to do legal work for Republicans pertaining to the 2026 and 2028 election cycles.
Martin, a staunch Trump loyalist, served as the interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia before being installed into his current role by the president. He is a vocal advocate for the president’s claims of fraud in the 2020 election, and Trump wrote Friday that Martin will, in the private sector, “fight legal battles” for Republicans in the coming midterm and general elections.
“Ed Martin has been with me from the very beginning, and done an incredible job as an Attorney, Director of the Weaponization Working Group, and the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia,” the president said on Truth Social.
“Ed is now leaving to go outside to fight Legal Battles for the upcoming Midterm Election, and the Presidential Election of 2028,” he continued. “I know he will do an outstanding job, ensure Free, Fair, and Honest Elections, and strongly advance our Constitutional Rights. Good luck Ed!”
The president and his allies have spent months laying the groundwork for potential fraud claims relating to the 2026 midterm elections. Historically, parties in power tend to fare poorly in the midterms, and Democrats have already stated a desire to investigate the Trump family’s business dealings and potentially impeach the president for a third time if they take back congressional majorities in November.
