Trump tells Senate to confirm his FDA nominee before midterm elections
President Donald Trump said Monday that he wants the Senate to prioritize confirming Dr. Heidi Overton, his nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration, before the 2026 midterm elections, in which Republicans are defending a slim majority.
Trump nominated Overton in late August during the congressional recess. The Senate is not scheduled to return to Washington until Sept. 14 and will again recess for virtually all of October to allow candidates time to campaign ahead of Election Day.
Still, Trump confirmed to the Washington Examiner during an Oval Office event Monday, in which Overton was present, that he still wants her confirmed before November.
“I hope so. I hope she’s fantastic. I would like her to be prioritized,” he said. “If I didn’t like her, I would say no. But I do like her. [Health and Human Services Secretary] Bobby [Kennedy] wants it faster.”
A potential pre-election confirmation hearing for Overton could once again force Republicans to grapple with the issue of abortion. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), who is facing a tough election against Democratic nominee Troy Jackson and has advocated abortion rights in the past, is a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, which would oversee Overton’s confirmation.

Meanwhile, some anti-abortion voices within the Republican Party have voiced frustrations with the Trump administration’s decision not to further limit abortion access at the national level. Trump has consistently said abortion is a state issue.
