This truth rests on two pillars of the New Testament: the exclusive Sonship of Christ and the eternal decree of God.
The One True Son…and the Many Who Become sons
John’s Gospel makes a bold, uncompromising claim: God has only one Son. “The only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father…” (John 1:18)
Jesus Christ alone is the eternal Son…uncreated, divine, and eternally one with the Father. Human beings are not born as God’s children. They do not currently share Christ’s nature, His eternity, or His divine Sonship. But John immediately adds a breathtaking promise: “As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God…” (John 1:12)
Sonship is not natural. It is not inherited. It is not automatic…It is given…a gift of grace, received by faith, by BELIEVING, and grounded entirely in union with Christ. Believers become sons because they are placed in the One true Son. And that is where Romans 8 opens the door to eternity.
Foreknown Before Creation.
Romans 8:29-30 is not merely a sequence of theological terms. It is a window into God’s eternal mind:
- Foreknown
- Predestined
- Called
- Justified
- Glorified
Every verb is past tense. Every action is rooted in God’s eternal purpose. And every step is anchored in Christ, “the firstborn among many brethren.” This means believers did not begin as accidents of history or products of chance. They began as persons God knew, loved, and purposed before time existed. Their earthly lives unfold inside a plan older than the universe itself. Pre‑existent in identity, destiny, and divine intention.
Written in Heaven Before the World Began
Hebrews 12:23 describes believers as part of: “the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven.”
Written where? In heaven.
Written when? Before they ever lived on earth.
This heavenly registry is not updated when someone believes. It is the manifestation of God’s eternal decree…a decree that already contained the names, destinies, and glorified futures of all who would become sons through Christ.
Your Life Began Before Genesis 1:1
When God said, “Let there be light,” He already knew every believer by name.
When He stretched out the heavens, He had already predestined them to be conformed to the image of His Son.
When He formed Adam from the dust, He already saw the redeemed standing in glory.
This is not mythology.
This is not speculation.
This is the logic of Scripture itself.
Believers were present at creation…they were present in the mind, love, and decree of God, chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).
The Comfort of an Eternal Beginning
To say believers “have been with God long before this life” is to say:
- God knew you before you knew Him.
- God loved you before you loved Him.
- God planned your salvation before you ever sinned.
- God secured your destiny before you ever lived.
Your story did not begin in a hospital room. It began in the eternal heart of God. And nothing in this world can undo what God purposed before the world began.
