President Donald Trump amplified his call for a National Guard deployment to Chicago in order to combat crime in the city, claiming “The people are chanting, BRING IN TRUMP!!!”
“Massive crime and rioting in the Chicago Loop area. Multiple Police Officers attacked and badly injured. 300 people rioting, 6 victims shot, one critical and one DEAD. In the meantime, Governor Pritzker and the Low IQ Mayor of Chicago are refusing Federal Government help for a situation that could be quickly remedied. The people are chanting, BRING IN TRUMP!!!” he posted on Truth Social on Saturday.
Trump was referring to two shootings in the Loop on Friday night that left one teenager dead and at least seven other people injured. According to Chicago Alderman Brian Hopkins, the shootings came during a larger riot involving “300 juveniles” who attacked multiple Chicago police officers, leaving one hospitalized.
The president’s post comes as his earlier troop deployment to the city was met with numerous legal setbacks. Following those rulings, 200 Texas National Guard troops previously sent to Chicago have headed back to the Lone Star State.
The Supreme Court is now weighing the deployment, including the 300 Illinois National Guard troops that Trump previously federalized but that a lower court ruled could not be deployed to Chicago.
Trump has long floated a potential crime crackdown in Chicago, but the idea has been met with stiff resistance from Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) and Mayor Brandon Johnson.
