President Donald Trump on Sunday said he would try to help Afghan refugees in the United Arab Emirates who aided the U.S. military before the Taliban retook control, even after his own administration ended protections for Afghans in the United States.
“I will try to save them, starting right now,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, linking to a news article.
Earlier this year, Trump paused refugee resettlement and ended temporary deportation protections for Afghans in the U.S. as part of his broader crackdown on immigration. But his statement on Sunday suggested he may be open to softening his position for certain Afghan refugees or helping find a solution abroad.

The UAE, a U.S. ally located in the Middle East, began housing thousands of Afghan refugees in 2021 after the U.S.-backed government crumbled and was retaken by the Taliban during the chaotic withdrawal of American troops.
The Biden administration, under which the U.S. withdrawal occurred, rehoused almost 200,000 Afghans.
