Michael Whatley, the president’s hand-picked candidate in North Carolina’s Senate race, shared a White House RSVP form for the event on social media Monday afternoon, urging his followers to “give him the North Carolina welcome he deserves.”
White House officials confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Trump will speak alongside Whatley at 6 p.m. Friday at the Rocky Mount Events Center.
Since November, Trump has steadily sought to downplay general economic concerns. Voters consistently listed affordability as their top issue in the 2025 elections, though Trump maintains that his policies are driving down costs and driving new investments in American industry.
Last week, those efforts took Trump to the Mount Airy Casino in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, where he defended his economic record and blamed his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, for ongoing inflation.
The president propped up the “fantastic” Whatley during his speech at the casino, telling the crowd that the former Republican National Committee chairman was integral to his 2024 general election victory.
“He’s running against the governor, who’s a radical left lunatic, and Michael should win,” Trump said at the time. “It’s hard you beat a two-term governor, but the governor didn’t do a good job.”
Despite the messaging push, Trump continues to lose ground with voters on the economy. Polling released Monday by CNN showed that the percentage of people who believe the country is on the wrong economic track jumped to 56%, a 13-point increase compared to January.
