The White House pushed back against Sen. Martin Heinrich’s (D-NM) rebuke of President Donald Trump’s call to reinstate the national celebration of Columbus Day, posting an iconic clip from The Sopranos television series.
Trump announced on Sunday that he would bring back Columbus Day, the second Monday in October, to celebrate Christopher Columbus discovering the United States, “back from the ashes.” On Monday morning, Heinrich, who previously advocated reframing the holiday as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” wrote on X that Trump’s push for Columbus Day would not be recognized in New Mexico. The White House’s Rapid Response X account responded with a clip of Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) discussing the explorer.
“[Columbus] discovered America is what he did,” Soprano states in the clip. “He was a brave Italian explorer, and in this house, Christopher Columbus is a hero. End of story!”
The Sopranos, which aired for six seasons between 1999 and 2007, focuses on Soprano, an Italian-American who lives in New Jersey and tries to balance his family life with his work as a mob boss.

Former President Joe Biden became the first U.S. president to commemorate Indigenous Peoples Day in 2021 and issued similar proclamations throughout his presidency. He also recognized Columbus Day.
On Truth Social, Trump lamented how Democrats did “everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus,” including having his statues “torn down.” However, he wrote that the Italian explorer would “make a major comeback,” likely referring to this year’s Columbus Day celebration on Oct. 13.
