President Donald Trump said he will be issuing an executive order requiring voter ID for “every single vote.”
Trump teased the order in a Truth Social post on Saturday night, in which he repeated his call for eliminating voting machines as well as mail-in voting with few exceptions.
“Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!! Also, No Mail-In Voting, Except For Those That Are Very Ill, And The Far Away Military. USE PAPER BALLOTS ONLY!!!” he posted.
It is unclear when the order will be issued, but the president hinted at an order getting rid of mail-in voting and voting machines earlier this month.
Then, Trump did not specifically mention voter ID would be included. But he did say he has the power over the states in voting matters because “the States are merely an ‘agent’ for the Federal Government in counting and tabulating the votes.”
LABOR DAY 2025: WHAT TO KNOW AHEAD OF TRAVELING THIS WEEKEND
According to Ballotpedia, 36 states currently require voters to show identification before casting a ballot, though the type of ID can vary.
For example, 25 of those states require photo ID, while the other 11 do not. The 14 remaining states, as well as Washington, D.C., do not require voters to show any form of identification before voting.
