White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Monday that President Donald Trump underwent a “preventative” MRI in October and “remains in excellent overall health.”
Trump himself was questioned about the MRI, which occurred during his routine physical, on Sunday night while flying back from Mar-a-Lago. He told reporters onboard Air Force One that he wasn’t aware of why he underwent the scan but promised to release the results this week.
Leavitt came to Monday’s press briefing prepared to answer questions on the topic and read a memo from White House physician Dr. Sean Barbabella citing that the scan was performed because “men in [Trump’s] age group benefit from a thorough evaluation of cardiovascular and abdominal health.”
“The purpose of this imaging is preventative, to identify any issues early, confirm overall health, and ensure the president maintains long-term vitality and function,” Leavitt said. “President Trump’s cardiovascular imaging was perfectly normal. No evidence of arterial narrowing impairing blood flow or abnormalities in the heart or major vessels. The heart chambers are normal in size. The vessel walls appear smooth and healthy, and there are no signs of inflammation or clotting.”
“Overall, his cardiovascular system shows excellent health. His abdominal imaging is also perfectly normal,” Leavitt concluded. “Everything evaluated is functioning within normal limits, with no acute or chronic concerns. In summary, this level of detailed assessment is standard for an executive physical at President Trump’s age, and confirms that he remains in excellent overall health.”
Later in the briefing, Leavitt attacked the New York Times for running a story over the weekend suggesting that Trump has scaled back his public schedule and “might not be fit” to perform the duties of the presidency, calling the reporting “unequivocally false.”

“Are you kidding me? You all see him almost every single day. He is the most accessible president in history. He is taking meetings around the clock,” she declared. “You all see that with your own eyes on a daily basis, and the President’s physician has now given you all three detailed reports on the state of the president’s health.”
