Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) suggested on Saturday that the United States would intervene to protect protesters in Iran as the death toll from demonstrations in the country has only increased.

Protests have engulfed Iran for nearly two weeks, with demonstrators taking to the streets of at least 100 cities, including Tehran. What began as unrest over a struggling economy has turned into calls for the toppling of the regime itself, with recent reports indicating that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is planning to flee the country.

While the regime continues to crack down on the protests in response, leading to at least 65 deaths and 2,300 arrests, U.S. officials and lawmakers have been hinting over the weekend at U.S. military action in response to the crackdown.

Most vocal of those was Graham, who issued a message to the protesters on Saturday saying their “long nightmare is soon coming to a close.”

“When President Trump says Make Iran Great Again, it means the protestors in Iran must prevail over the ayatollah. That is the clearest signal yet that he, President Trump understands Iran will never be great with the ayatollah and his henchmen in charge,” he said. “To all who are sacrificing in Iran, God bless. Help is on the way.”

Graham’s statement follows numerous suggestions from President Donald Trump that the U.S. would intervene if the regime killed protesters.

INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE ON IRAN PICKS UP AFTER TRUMP THREAT NOT TO KILL PROTESTERS

Earlier Saturday, Trump said the U.S. “stands ready to help,” adding that “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before.”

Trump’s warnings have been rebuked by the regime, with the head of Iran’s military threatening preemptive strikes and Khamenei urging Trump to stay out of the situation.
