Some people are just bad. They do bad things. They are bad. And they are not believers. But that’s not who Paul warns Titus and us to watch out for. Paul’s warning is about the ones who claim to know God, but their lives expose them as empty talkers and deceivers. These are the “polished pretenders.”
These people might sit in your church. They might lead a Bible study. They might even be your pastor. But they all share one unmistakable trait, “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.” Titus 1:16
