Wix is pulling the plug on approximately 20% of its global workforce. CEO Avishai Abrahami confirmed the sweeping cuts will eliminate roughly 1,000 jobs across the organization. The company is pointing the finger at two main culprits for this corporate bloodbath: highly unfavorable exchange rates and the apparently inevitable robot takeover.
Financially, Wix is caught between a rock and a hard place. The web development platform collects the vast majority of its revenue in US dollars but pays a massive chunk of its staff in the increasingly strong Israeli shekel. This brutal currency mismatch has severely inflated their baseline operational costs. Shockingly, basic economics still applies even to established tech giants. After posting a dismal $57.5 million net loss in the first quarter of 2026 and seeing its stock price plummet from its pandemic peaks, the leadership team decided it was finally time to trim the fat.
However, the real star of this layoff announcement is artificial intelligence. Abrahami framed this aggressive restructuring as a massive evolutionary step, which is standard CEO speak for replacing human employees with automated systems. Rapid AI integration has simply rendered many existing roles entirely redundant, particularly those in content creation, customer support, and basic coding. Instead of relying on traditional, bloated organizational layers, Wix is flattening its management structure to speed up decision making. They are also introducing shiny new AI-native roles with pretentious titles like “Xengineer” to replace the outgoing staff.
Wix is hardly a pioneer in this ruthless trend. The broader tech industry has already slashed over 134,000 jobs in 2026 alone, with many corporations happily swapping out human workers for cheaper AI tools that never ask for a raise. While it might be a bold new era for corporate efficiency, it is certainly a rough time to be a junior developer.
