President Donald Trump’s primetime Oval Office address tonight, July 16, 2026, 9:00pm EST, is anticipated to set the stage for sweeping changes to federal election policies, (The Save America Act), ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections. While the President has vaguely teased a “very big announcement” regarding elections, analysts expect the speech to pivot toward immediate administrative and legislative actions.
The address will serve as a public justification for the administration’s recent dismantling of the federal Election Assistance Commission (EAC). Last week, Trump cleared the bipartisan agency by firing its two Democratic commissioners, Benjamin Hovland and Thomas Hicks, and requesting the resignation of Republican Christy McCormick. Because Don Palmer resigned in April, the EAC is now entirely without a quorum and unable to conduct official business. White House cited the Supreme Court decision in Trump v. Slaughter, which upheld the President’s authority to dismiss members of independent agencies, to justify these removals.

Acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte, who assumed the role in June 2026 after Tulsi Gabbard’s resignation, is reportedly spearheading the release of documents that the administration claims will highlight technical vulnerabilities in current voting infrastructure.
Trump will leverage these vulnerability claims to aggressively push for tighter federal voting regulations. Proposed legislative priorities include instituting nationwide voter identification mandates and restricting the use of mail ballots.
