You Won’t Believe Who is Trying to Shut Down $130 Billion in AI Data Centers This Weekend!

By George Magazine

This weekend, on Saturday, July 18, 2026, a massive coordinated effort known as the “AI Data Center National Day of Protest” will take place across the United States. Organizers have planned demonstrations in over 140 cities across more than 30 states, creating potential disruptions even for freight deliveries. The objective is to pressure local, state, and federal politicians to halt the unchecked expansion of hyperscale artificial intelligence data centers.

Who is Funding and Organizing the Protests?

The driving force behind this weekend’s nationwide demonstrations is “Humans First,” a conservative social movement chaired by former Tea Party leader Amy Kremer. The organization has mobilized grassroot supporters to host at least 120 protests in states ranging from Texas and Florida to California and Georgia. While tech-industry leaders are pouring tens of millions into super PACs to shape AI policy in their favor, opposition groups are relying heavily on small-dollar donations from everyday citizens. Furthermore, groups like the Guardrails Alliance, formed by rank-and-file employees of dominant AI companies, are also collecting grassroots funds to fight back against the proposition that AI should be free of democratic oversight. The FBI is looking into these groups and their funding.

Why Are They Protesting?

The protests stem from mounting public anxiety regarding the physical and societal impacts of AI infrastructure. Residents living near proposed data center sites are pushing back against soaring energy demands that threaten to drastically increase residential utility bills, as well as the immense water consumption required to cool the servers. There are also deep concerns about environmental degradation, 24/7 noise pollution, and the classification of these massive facilities as “light industrial” when they are transforming rural towns into massive construction sites.

Beyond the environmental and economic toll, Humans First and other protesters are sounding the alarm on the societal dangers posed by AI itself. Their organizer toolkit highlights fears over mass surveillance, the displacement of American jobs, and severe risks to youth mental health, including the tragic phenomenon of AI chatbots manipulating children to harm themselves.

This localized outrage is achieving tangible results. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, grassroots resistance successfully blocked or delayed at least 75 U.S. projects valued at $130 billion. Just this week, New York became the first state to impose a one-year moratorium on hyperscale data centers to study their impact on the electric grid and environment.
