The Toxic Church Trend That is Secretly Destroying Your Faith.

By Dave Blaze

In the modern church era, a dangerous and seductive doctrine has crept into the pulpit, wearing the mask of divine blessing. It is commonly called the prosperity gospel. This teaching promises that faithful living, coupled with positive confessions and financial donations, will guarantee health, wealth, and earthly success. However, a close examination of the Scriptures reveals that this ideology stands in direct opposition to the true Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a subtle trap that leads believers away from eternal truths and anchors their hearts to the fleeting comforts of this world.

The Apostle Paul warned Timothy of men who would pervert the truth for financial gain. In 1 Timothy 6:5, he speaks of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, “…supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.”

The prosperity gospel does exactly this. It equates material gain with spiritual godliness. It tells the flock that if they are poor or sick, they must be lacking in faith. Yet, Paul continues in the very next verse to clarify what true wealth is: “But godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6). We are reminded that we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

When the focus of a sermon shifts from the finished work of the cross to the accumulation of earthly treasures, the cross is effectively emptied of its power. Jesus Christ Himself gave a clear and uncompromising command regarding our allegiance. In Matthew 6:24, He declares, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” The prosperity message attempts to merge God and mammon, suggesting that God exists primarily to serve our fleshly desires. It reduces the Creator of the universe to a cosmic vending machine, dispensing blessings upon the insertion of a tithe.

Furthermore, this false gospel completely ignores the biblical theology of suffering. Christ never promised His followers a life free from trials. Instead, He promised His presence in the midst of them. In Matthew 16:24, Jesus said unto his disciples, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” The prosperity preachers rarely speak of self denial. They speak of self fulfillment, self actualization, and self enrichment. But the path to eternal life is paved with surrender, not selfish ambition.

The danger of loving money and pursuing riches is explicitly detailed in Scripture. 1 Timothy 6:9 warns, “But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.” By encouraging believers to chase after wealth, false teachers are actively leading them into a snare. The love of money is the root of all evil, yet the prosperity gospel waters and fertilizes this very root, calling it a blessing.

We must return to the unadulterated Word of God. We must look away from the hollow promises of earthly riches and fix our eyes upon Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. The true Gospel calls us to repentance, to holiness, and to a life surrendered entirely to God, regardless of our financial state. Let us heed the warning of 2 Timothy 4:3, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.” Let us refuse to have our ears tickled by the deceitfulness of riches, and instead stand firm upon the eternal, unchanging truth of the Bible.

And here is the most important message…the TRUE Gospel of Jesus Christ:

In Ephesians 1:13 the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul declares that men are saved and sealed by hearing and BELIEVING the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your Salvation. Therefore, here, now, is declared unto you the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your Salvation: “that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. BELIEVE today. The time is short.
