You Won’t Believe What the Apostle Paul Said About Toxic People (And Why You Need to Run)!

The Apostle Paul pulled no punches when he wrote his second letter to Timothy. In 2 Timothy 3:1-5, we are presented with a grim forecast of human behavior in the “last days.” Paul warns that “perilous times shall come,” not because of political upheaval or natural disasters, but because of a severe degradation in human character. He lists a litany of unsavory traits: lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers. It reads quite a bit like a modern social media feed. Yet, tucked away in verse 4 are two specific descriptors that warrant a closer look: “heady” and “high-minded.” 

Let us first examine the word “heady.” The Greek word “propetes” is translated as heady, meaning rash, reckless, or headstrong. A heady person is someone who rushes forward with blind confidence, completely unbothered by facts, wisdom, or the counsel of others. They are governed by their own impulsive intellect. People today are quick to speak, quick to judge, and perfectly willing to burn down the metaphorical house just to prove they know how to strike a match. Paul warns Timothy about these individuals because their recklessness is destructive. They fracture the community with their stubborn insistence on their own way. 

Following closely on the heels of the heady is the “high-minded” individual. The Greek term “tuphoo” literally means to be enveloped in smoke, or puffed up with conceit. To be high-minded is to be blindingly arrogant. These are the people who are thoroughly convinced of their own undeniable brilliance. They look down their noses at everyone else, viewing others as less enlightened or simply less important. High-minded people are utterly unteachable because they believe they already possess all the answers. If you have ever tried to have a reasonable conversation with someone who is completely full of themselves, you understand exactly what Paul was warning against. It is an exercise in futility. 

Paul does not just provide a list of bad behaviors for Timothy to memorize. He attaches a stark, uncompromising command to the end of verse 5. After describing these people as “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof,” Paul drops the hammer: “from such turn away.” This is not a suggestion to engage them in polite debate. It is not an encouragement to try and fix their deep-seated narcissism. Paul tells Timothy to walk away. The combination of being headstrong, arrogantly puffed up, and cloaked in a fake religious veneer is a recipe for spiritual disaster. 

This “form of godliness” is perhaps the most insidious part of Paul’s warning. It is easy to spot a blatantly wicked person. It is much harder to identify the rot within someone who wears a mask of piety. The heady and high-minded individuals often infiltrate religious and social circles under the guise of leadership. They use their loud, reckless confidence to gather followers and demand unquestioning obedience. Frankly, you do not have to look very hard to find them today. They are the ones standing on soapboxes, declaring themselves the ultimate authority on everything, all while ignoring basic human decency. They expect you to bow to their superior intellect, but they would not lift a single finger to serve you. 

When you encounter the heady and high-minded, do not waste your time trying to dismantle their towering egos. You cannot reason with a smokescreen. You cannot domesticate a reckless spirit. The most faithful and protective action you can take for your own well-being is to follow the ancient instruction of the Apostle Paul. Recognize the perilous nature of their pride, identify the emptiness of their fake piety, and simply turn away. Protect your peace from those who would trample it under the boots of their own self-importance. In an age that often rewards loud arrogance, quiet humility and discerning avoidance are true virtues. The Scriptures are clear that true power lies not in being the loudest voice in the room, but in genuine submission to God. The heady and high-minded reject this, trading true divinity for a cheap, theatrical performance of righteousness. Your job is not to be their audience. 

In Ephesians 1:13 the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul declares that men are saved and sealed by hearing and BELIEVING the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your Salvation. Therefore, here, now, is declared unto you the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your Salvation: “that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. BELIEVE today. The time is short.
