Vance says China ‘willing to play ball’ on strangling Iran’s economy
Vice President JD Vance indicated that U.S. overtures to Beijing to crack down on Chinese banks providing financial services to Iran are beginning to work.
The vice president told the Washington Examiner during a White House press briefing Thursdsay that he wasn’t sure whether President Donald Trump had raised the subject with Chinese President Xi Jinping personally. But Vance said that administration officials have had conversations with Beijing and that, “frankly, I think the Chinese have been responsive to some of the requests that we’ve made.”
Later in the briefing, facing down a second question regarding Chinese banks working to stand up Iranian interests, Vance reiterated that China is “willing to play ball here.”
“Say what you will about [China], they are not the sort of nation that shoots at commercial shipping because they’re not getting their way in an international dispute. They are, in that way I think, willing to be a little bit more responsible.”
“Again, I’m not saying they’re doing everything that we’ve asked them to do, but I think that the PRC has been much more responsible, certainly than the Iranians, and much more responsible than a couple of other nations as well,” the vice president added.

Last week, the Trump administration announced an “economic D-Day,” seeking to strong-arm third-party nations into cutting off financial support for Iran or risk secondary sanctions. Trump told reporters that he planned to speak directly with his foreign counterparts to pressure them into joining the effort.
