Trump says he’s ‘looking at’ opening US military base in Venezuela

President Donald Trump is open to the prospect of a U.S. military base in Venezuela or somewhere else in South America.

“We’re looking at doing a lot of things,” Trump told reporters on Thursday. “We’re getting along very well, as you know, and Venezuela has been a great situation. The people are happy, and I’m very happy. We’re taking a lot of oil, and we have a great relationship. Venezuela is making a lot of money, and so are we. We’re going to start filling up our national strategic reserves with the Venezuelan oil for very little money, and it’s going to be great.”

Trump made the comments as he departed the White House en route to Texas and Oklahoma, two states that have been traditionally Republican strongholds, a month before November’s midterm elections.

“Well, I won all of them by a lot,” he said. “I’m going there just to make sure.”

Later, he added that he was traveling to the red states because “you have to thank these states that are with you 1,000%.”

“We’ve done a great job, and the thing I haven’t done a good job with is explaining it to people,” he said.

Trump also told reporters that he has not spoken to Republican Texas Senate nominee Ken Paxton, who was recorded last week during a fundraiser in Washington, telling donors that the GOP midterm convention last month in Dallas did not help his campaign.

“I’ll tell you what, we have to win this election,” Trump said. “That convention was a tremendous success.”

The president is expected to appear alongside Paxton later Thursday at the Peterbilt Motors factory in Denton, Texas, north of Dallas.

Trump told reporters, too, that he is likely to endorse in the 2028 Republican presidential primary, criticizing Democrats for not having a “bench” of candidates, and suggested he will likely pardon many of his aides before the end of his administration.

“Based on Biden, I can do whatever I want because he certainly pardoned a lot of people,” he said. “He pardoned everybody.”
