President Donald Trump repeatedly suggested Tuesday that his recently brokered agreement to procure Russian diesel fuel is not meant for the United States, but for the benefit of the global market.

On Friday, Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin before announcing the deal, which would, according to Trump’s statement, “supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace, another 500,000 Tons during the month of November, and 1,000,000 Tons immediately thereafter.”

Despite the president’s efforts to lower prices for Americans in the transportation and agriculture industries, the announcement quickly drew criticism from Democrats, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and even some Republicans.

Trump spoke with reporters before departing the White House on Tuesday, where he shifted course, saying the diesel deal is “not for us.”

“That’s being released into the world. That’s not being released to us,” Trump said. “That’s a diesel deal that’s going to be released into the world for the world market because the world market suffers with high prices.”

“When you knock out diesel refineries, that’s not a great thing,” the president said of Ukraine’s attacks against Russia’s energy infrastructure. “But they’re not releasing that to us. They’re releasing it to the entire world.”

Later in his remarks on Tuesday, Trump reiterated that the deal is “a way of getting a lot of oil out to the world.”

“It’s not a deal with me. It’s a deal for the world, and it brought down prices, by the way,” he said. “The oil deal brought down prices, but that’s a world deal. That’s not a USA deal.”
