Canadian fan disses Trump’s Lake America renaming at FIBA Women’s World Cup with sign

A Canadian fan attending Team USA’s game at the FIBA World Cup on Friday has taken aim at President Donald Trump.

The fan brought a sign to the game that expressed her apparent displeasure with Trump’s recent executive order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America.

On one side of the sign, the fan wrote, “Lake America?” in blue marker. The fan then turned the sign around to express her disdain, writing “Lake Ontario!!” in red marker.

Trump’s executive order to rename the Great Lake comes amid a trade war with Canada.

“The Lake of America was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, actually. As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico — we changed it — and now it’s very routinely the Gulf of America,” Trump said in the Oval Office last month.

The executive order called the United States the greatest protector of the Great Lakes.

“Without the security and investment provided by the United States, this freshwater system would not be open for shipping, recreation, and responsible use to the same extent as it is today.”

Trump directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and the department to reflect the name change in the Geographic Names Information System. While the name change may be embraced in the United States, it clearly is not resonating north of the border.

While the Canadian fan expressed her displeasure with the name change, she did get to see the United States open the FIBA Women’s World Cup with a dominant win over China.

The United States won 94-61, with Caitlin Clark recording a double-double in her senior international debut with 14 points and 11 assists in 25 minutes off the bench. Paige Bueckers and Rhyne Howard also had 14 points apiece the win for the United States.
