According to the FBI’s annual crime report, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter offenses fell an estimated 18.1% in 2025, while robbery offenses declined 18.5%, rape offenses fell 7.6%, and aggravated assault declined 7.2%.
The Trump administration quickly seized on the figures as evidence that the president’s policies have made the country safer.
“We ended the war on police, and we declared a very strong war on crime,” President Donald Trump said during a Friday appearance in Long Island.
“With your help, last year we achieved the largest drop in murder rate ever recorded, the lowest level in 125 years,” Trump told a crowd of police officers.
The national murder rate in 2025 was 4.1 per 100,000 inhabitants, tying 1955 and 1956 for the lowest rate recorded since at least the middle of the 20th century.
Law enforcement agencies also submitted reports to the FBI involving 10,881 hate crime incidents and 13,026 related offenses motivated by bias based on race, ethnicity or ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender, or gender identity.
Earlier this week, administration officials were touting the reduced crime rates ahead of Trump’s New York appearance, latching on to the messaging as the midterm elections are less than 100 days away.
“President Trump and Attorney General Blanche have empowered U.S. Attorneys to pursue violent offenders and given them the full resources of the Department to do it,” a DOJ spokesman told the Washington Examiner. “When you hold criminals accountable, crime goes down — these numbers prove it.”
White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis similarly pointed to the FBI data as evidence that Trump has fulfilled his campaign promise to reduce crime.
“President Trump promised to make America safe again and the data proves he has done just that,” Bis told the Washington Examiner. “Just [on Tuesday], another survey by the Major Cities Chiefs Association found significant drops in violent crime including a more than 17% decrease in murders [during the first half of the year compared to in 2025]. Unlike Defund-the-Police Democrats, President Trump will always stand with our law enforcement officers and deliver safer American neighborhoods.”
