MIDNIGHT MASSACRE: TRUMP BACKED CHALLENGERS CRUSH ESTABLISHMENT IN OHIO AND INDIANA

By George Magazine

The results from last night are officially in, and the establishment panic we discussed yesterday has transformed into a full blown reality. The May 5 primaries delivered a definitive answer regarding the direction of the Republican party.

Here is your post election brief for the morning of Wednesday, May 6, 2026, ready for the George Dispatch subscribers to digest.

The Results: Ohio’s Populist Sweep

  1. Ohio Governor: Ramaswamy Rolls

As expected, Vivek Ramaswamy completely crushed his primary opponents, securing the GOP nomination with roughly 81% of the vote.

  • Overnight News: During his victory speech in Columbus last night, Ramaswamy didn’t even mention his primary challengers. He launched immediately into a blistering attack on his general election opponent, Democrat Amy Acton, calling her the “architect of pandemic misery.” Acton’s campaign fired back early this morning, announcing a record breaking overnight fundraising haul of $1.2 million, signaling exactly how expensive this race will become.
  1. Ohio Senate Special: The Incumbent Falls

This is the headline of the cycle. Trump endorsed challenger Jane Doe officially unseated appointed incumbent Senator Jon Husted, winning by a comfortable 8 point margin.

  • Overnight News: Husted conceded just before 11:00 PM EST. The mood among national GOP establishment figures is reportedly grim this morning. Jane Doe’s victory speech heavily credited Donald Trump’s Saturday rally for putting her over the edge. She now faces unified Democrat Alice Davis in November.

Indiana: The Down Ballot Purge

While Indiana lacked top of the ticket statewide drama, the U.S. House and state legislative primaries were a bloodbath for moderate Republicans. Trump-endorsed challengers, heavily leaning into the Trump agenda, successfully ousted several business friendly, establishment incumbents across the state. The grassroots populist wave proved it has deep down ballot momentum.

The Trump Endorsement Report Card

The performance of Donald Trump’s endorsements last night was absolute and flawless. By dragging Jane Doe across the finish line against a sitting, appointed Senator, the Trump endorsement proved it is still the single most potent weapon in conservative politics. Any whispers that his influence was waning in the 2026 cycle have been permanently silenced this morning.

Strategic Consequences for November

For the Republicans:

The civil war is effectively over, and the populist wing won. The establishment GOP has been completely sidelined in Ohio and severely weakened in Indiana. The consequence is a highly motivated, high energy base that will demand total loyalty to the America First platform. The challenge now is whether this energized base can win over the moderate suburbanites needed in the general election.

For the Democrats:

Publicly, Democrats are sounding the alarm. Privately, they are exactly where they wanted to be. They view a Doe and Ramaswamy ticket as highly polarizing. Democratic strategists believe these candidates are too extreme for the crucial suburban voters around Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland. They are already weaponizing last night’s results to scare independent voters and drive massive national fundraising.
