Washington, D.C., District Attorney Jeanine Pirro on Sunday said vandalism to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool that promotes algal blooms will be met with “serious charges” as workers scramble to repair President Donald Trump’s multimillion-dollar beautification project.
As part of his plan to revamp and clean the Reflecting Pool, Trump had the bottom painted “American flag blue,” but shortly after the pool was refilled, algae took over, and the blue paint started coming up.
In an interview with Peter Doocey of Fox News, Pirro was asked about the fate of an ABC News journalist after Trump publicly called him out for “trying to rip the rubber off of the surface” of the pool that was seen floating in the water over the past few days.
“Anyone who was in a position of vandalizing or attempting to vandalize the reflecting pool will face the criminal justice system in D.C.,” Pirro said, adding that citations have already been handed out to individuals for vandalization and their cases will be prosecuted “to the full extent.”
“If there are more serious products that are put into the reflecting pool to create more algae or a bigger problem, then we’ll consider more serious charges,” Pirro said, noting vandalism is a misdemeanor charge. “But make no mistake, making D.C. beautiful is a priority, and if you damage, vandalize, or do anything to impact something like the reflective pool, you can be prosecuted.”
US PARK POLICE ARREST FORMER OLYMPIAN FOR VANDALISM OF REFLECTING POOL
U.S. Park Police arrested a former Olympian on Saturday for allegedly vandalizing the Reflecting Pool. David Hearn, 67, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of destruction of government property, but claimed he only reached into the pool to feel a detached piece of the pool’s liner to see what it felt like.
Trump on Saturday said the algae in the pool is “75% gone” and the detached liner will be repaired within the next week. The president is on a strict schedule to get the pool in tip-top shape in time for July Fourth celebrations.
