The Hidden Blessing of Want: Growing Faith Through God’s Provision

By Gene Ho

The Apostle Paul talked about learning contentment in every season, both in plenty and in want. He said, “I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound… to be full and to be hungry… to abound and to suffer need.” Philippians 4:12

Most of us might joke, “Well, if I have to learn one of those, I’d rather struggle with being rich.” But not so fast.

Being abased, being in a season of little, actually gives you a front row seat to watch the Lord provide in your life.

Jesus said to His disciples, “…and do ye not remember?” Mark 8:18. Then He reminded them how five loaves fed five thousand, and how seven loaves fed four thousand. And He finished with the question: “How is it that ye do not understand?” Mark 8:21

In other words: “You’ve seen Me provide before. Why are you worried now?”

When you are abased, your faith often grows faster, because you see the Lord multiply what you have. You see His hand in your own life.

So, when you walk through hard times, don’t just look at what you lack. LOOK for the blessings of the Lord in your life. They’re there. And they’re teaching you to trust Him.
