President Donald Trump’s warm relationship with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani went up in flames Thursday after the president said the socialist was “DESTROYING New York” following the mayor’s first 100 days in office.
President Donald Trump fired off a Truth Social post, criticizing Mamdani’s support of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s (D-NY) proposed pied-à-terre tax, an annual surcharge on homes valued above $5 million when there is no primary New York City resident present.
Mamdani touted the first-of-its-kind proposal in the state, saying, “We are taxing the rich” in an announcement. The proposal is estimated to generate $500 million in revenue annually, according to Hochul’s office.
However, speaking on Thursday’s broadcast of CBS Mornings about his first 100 days in office, Mamdani described an active collaboration with the president despite their partisan disagreements and their meetings earlier this year.
“I would say the two of us are in touch,” he said. “We’ve had a number of meetings now in the Oval Office, and we are honest [and] direct about the fact that we have many disagreements.”
Trump continued his reflection on the policy, saying, “It will only get WORSE. The TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG. People are fleeing. They must change their ways, AND FAST. History has proven, THIS “STUFF” JUST DOESN’T WORK.”
The pied-à-terre tax, supported by 93% of New Yorkers, targets wealthy out-of-city residents and global elites who use New York City real estate as an investment vehicle rather than as homes.’’
Nonresident owners do not pay New York City’s income taxes. To avoid taxation, property owners could make the home their primary residence or rent it out to someone else who does so.
“If you can afford a $5 million second home that sits empty most of the year, you can afford to contribute like every other New Yorker,” Hochul said.
MAMDANI SAYS HE KEEPS ‘IN TOUCH’ WITH TRUMP IN SPITE OF DISAGREEMENTS
In recent years, local officials have raised alarms about foreign investors, including Russian elites tied to President Vladimir Putin, building luxury high-rise apartments in Manhattan but not living there.
Trump’s three-story penthouse on the 66th floor of Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan served as his New York residence from 1983 until September 2019, when he designated Mar-a-Lago as his primary residence.
