President Donald Trump signed an executive order allowing the use of some psychedelic drugs to treat post-traumatic stress disorder.
Flanked by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., podcaster Joe Rogan, and other cabinet officials, Trump said his new executive order “directs the FDA to expedite their review of certain psychedelics already designated as breakthrough therapy drugs.”
“The executive order I’m signing, we’re actually signing the executive order today, is really a moment,” Trump said. “These treatments are currently in the advanced stages of clinical trials to ensure that they’re both safe and effective for the American patients.”
“In many cases, these experimental treatments have shown life-changing potential for those suffering from severe mental illness and depression, including our cherished veterans,” Trump added.
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins linked the executive order to better veteran health care as well.
“We need an all-of-the-above strategy when it comes to tackling mental health, and your EO opens up new possibilities for America’s Veterans,” he said in a post on X after thanking the president.
Trump marveled at the apparent efficacy of some of the drugs, noting a 2024 study from Stanford University where 30 special operations veterans saw a drastic improvement in their conditions.
The veterans, he said, “experienced an 80 to 90% reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety within one month.”
“Can I have some, please?” the president joked.
Rogan, who has repeatedly recalled his use of psychedelic drugs on his podcast, credited Brian Hubbard and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry for his being there, recalling their appearance on his podcast.
“They told me how impactful this medicine is, and having that conversation with them,” the podcast host said. “Millions of people got a chance to hear their story, hear the stories of all the different people that have had life-changing experiences from it.”

Former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, famous for being the sole survivor of his four-man squad in Operation Red Wings during the War in Afghanistan and inspiration for the movie Lone Survivor, credited the psychedelic treatment with getting his “life back.” He said the executive order would save many lives.
“I literally live the best days of my life every single day. I’m so thankful for everybody who’s in this room to help out with this,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of people out there that need help, not only our veterans, but our civilian population, that can benefit from this, and it’s going to do great things for our country to get it back on track and open up a lot of doorways and pathways for us to be successful in the future.”
