Trump threatens 100% tariffs on movies made on foreign soil

President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the United States in a social media post on Monday, another escalation tactic as the president seeks to increase production in the nation.

“Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby,’” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit! Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.”

The post offered few details about when or how the tariffs will be imposed. The White House did not offer more information when asked by the Washington Examiner.

The president also threatened to levy more fines on any nation that does not produce its furniture in the U.S.

“In order to make North Carolina, which has completely lost its furniture business to China, and other Countries, GREAT again, I will be imposing substantial Tariffs on any Country that does not make its furniture in the United States. Details to follow!!!” he wrote on Truth Social.

But on Tuesday, tariffs on “heavy” trucks, upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and “outside branded or patented” pharmaceutical products, ranging from 25% to 100%, are set to take effect.

In May, Trump threatened to impose “a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands,” in a social media post, startling Hollywood.

That post also did not provide any details about when or how the levy would be imposed. Tariffs have not yet been imposed on foreign-produced films, although Trump’s latest post implies that levies may come soon.

The president is imposing the tariffs through Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, allowing his administration to impose levies without congressional action.
