Donald Trump said he would bring “Columbus Day back from the ashes” in his capacity as president.

“The Democrats did everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus, his reputation, and all of the Italians that love him so much,” Trump claimed on Truth Social. “They tore down his Statues, and put up nothing but ‘WOKE,’ or even worse, nothing at all! Well, you’ll be happy to know, Christopher is going to make a major comeback. I am hereby reinstating Columbus Day under the same rules, dates, and locations, as it has had for all of the many decades before!”

100-DAY REPORT CARD: TRUMP TORNADO SHOCKED AMERICA — AND THE WORLD

Columbus Day is a federal holiday celebrated every second Monday in October. The holiday has grown controversial to some due to Christopher Columbus’s perceived ties to colonialism and poor treatment of indigenous populations in the Americas.

Some states and cities celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on the same date as a counter celebration.

Former President Joe Biden formally commemorated Indigenous Peoples Day in 2021, becoming the first president to do so. He proclaimed the day to honor Native Americans, their “resilience and strength” and determination to preserve “land, language, spirit, knowledge, and tradition” in the face of “centuries-long campaign of violence, displacement, assimilation, and terror.”

He issued similar presidential proclamations in all four years of his presidency. The Biden administration still acknowledged Columbus Day as well throughout Biden’s presidency.

Indigenous Peoples Day is not a federally recognized holiday.
