Did Judgment Day Already Happen? The Major Flaw in Preterism Revealed! Don’t be Fooled Again!

By Dave Blaze

Preterism, specifically the “Full” variety, posits an astonishing claim. It asserts that every biblical prophecy, including the Second Coming of Christ, the resurrection of the dead, and the final judgment, wrapped up neatly by AD 70 with the destruction of the Jewish temple. It is a bold theological stance. It is also fundamentally flawed, relying on the ultimate hermeneutical bait and switch.

Preterists demand a strictly literal reading of history when it suits them, and then they sprint toward allegory the moment the facts become inconvenient. They plant their flag on an extremely literal reading of phrases like “this generation” to mean exactly the people living in the first century. They point to the literal, physical stones of the Jewish Temple being thrown down by actual Roman soldiers.

But the moment you ask about the rest of the prophecies in those exact same biblical chapters, the rules completely change:

  • The Second Coming: Becomes an invisible judgment.

  • The Resurrection: Morphs from physical bodies leaving literal graves into a hidden transfer of souls to a spiritual realm.

  • The New Earth: Transforms from a restored physical cosmos into a theological state of mind.

It is a massive inconsistency. If a historical event like the AD 70 siege is literal, it is logically absurd to claim the cosmic events described in the exact same breath are entirely spiritual.

Explaining Away the Observable Universe

To reconcile their theology with the undeniable reality of a world still filled with physical death, war, and suffering, Full Preterists rely on radically redefining scriptural promises. When Revelation 21 promises a new heaven and a new earth where God wipes away every tear and death is no more, Preterists argue this is not about the physical planet. Instead, they interpret these terms as Jewish prophetic idioms for covenantal worlds. The “Old Heaven and Earth” represents the Old Covenant system of Judaism, and the “New Heaven and Earth” is the New Covenant system of Christianity.

Because people obviously still die biologically, Preterists argue that the biblical definition of “death” in this context is strictly spiritual separation from God. Since Christ defeated spiritual death, they claim the current world is the fully realized Kingdom of God in a spiritual sense. They lean heavily on Old Testament apocalyptic language, arguing that just as Isaiah used cosmic imagery like darkened stars to describe the political fall of Babylon, Jesus and John used the same poetic vocabulary to describe the fall of Jerusalem.

A Convenient Unverifiability

This is an incredibly convenient way to build a theology. If a prophecy clearly did not happen in the physical world, Preterists simply claim it happened in the invisible realm where absolutely no one can fact check it. They anchor their entire ideology on a devastating physical war, yet they evaporate the actual hope of the gospel into the ether just to make their timeline work. It takes the ultimate, cosmic victory of Christ and shrinks it down to a local Roman police action, leaving the rest of humanity holding the bag in a world that is very clearly still broken.

Furthermore, the bodily resurrection of believers is a cornerstone of orthodox Christian hope. Paul explicitly links the future bodily resurrection of Christians to the physical, historical resurrection of Jesus. Redefining this as purely spiritual requires a level of hermeneutical gymnastics that would make a professional contortionist wince. When the apostles watched Jesus ascend, they were told He would return in the exact same physical, visible manner. A mystical, unnoticed return simply does not fit the biblical criteria.

The Historical Verdict

Historically, the early church completely missed this supposed AD 70 fulfillment. If the Second Coming happened then, Christians living in AD 71 would have enthusiastically celebrated it. Instead, church fathers who lived just after this period, such as Justin Martyr and Irenaeus, continued to write about the Second Coming as a future, physical event. The universal, historic Christian creeds explicitly declare a future return of Christ to judge the living and the dead.

Full Preterism forces its adherents to spiritualize away the clearest promises of Scripture, ignore the continuous testimony of historic Christianity, and deny the painful reality of a groaning world still awaiting its final redemption.
