Are you a busybody? Is it really that serious?

By Gene Ho

As believers, we know that when we boldly proclaim Jesus, the world will push back. Scripture tells us this is actually a blessing: “If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you…” (1 Peter 4:14)

But Peter gives a sobering warning: not all suffering is noble. Some Christians create their own trouble, not because they’re standing for Christ, but because they’re meddling.

And God puts that behavior in shocking company.

But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.” (1 Peter 4:15)

That’s not a small word. A busybody adds weight to the people actually doing God’s will. They stir drama, spread halftruths, insert themselves into situations that don’t concern them, and unintentionally strengthen the lies already aimed at faithful believers.

So, here’s the call: Don’t pile on to the slander that comes against Christians who are obeying God. Don’t insert yourself into conflicts that aren’t yours. Don’t fan the flames of gossip, suspicion, or hate.

If you suffer, let it be because you stood for Christ and not because you couldn’t stay out of someone else’s business.
