Biden donor reveals biggest difference for Democrats between 2016 and 2024

Biden donor reveals biggest difference for Democrats between 2016 and 2024 at george magazine

A top donor to President Joe Biden said Democrats are going into the 2024 election far more prepared than they were in 2016. The reason? Understanding the importance of visiting the Midwest.

John Morgan, a top Democratic fundraiser and an attorney in Central Florida, revealed his nerves surrounding the 2024 election, but he said he believes the Democrats understand the political landscape better than they had in 2016, according to a Washington Post report

He suggested Democrats had too much confidence going into 2016 as they were not prepared or expecting to lose to former President Donald Trump, highlighting his faith in Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez.

“In 2016, we were reading Nate Silver, and we weren’t worried at all. When we woke up, we realized we’ve never been to Wisconsin, and we’ve never been to Michigan, and then all the Monday-morning quarterbacks are out. That won’t be the case for Julie,” he said. “Because we all are prepared to lose.”

Many asked in the wake of the election, “What if Hillary had gone to Wisconsin?”, the state she lost to Trump by a slim margin of 27,000 votes. Clinton’s absence from visiting the state of Wisconsin during her 2016 presidential race has become a metaphor for the strategic missteps during her Democratic campaign.

The Biden campaign has been busy on the campaign trail since Super Tuesday in March, having visited eight states — including six key swing states he sees as a “must win.”

In comparison, Trump has been largely missing from the campaign trail in the same time frame, having visited two states with two new visits in Michigan and Wisconsin scheduled for Tuesday. Tuesday marks his first visit to Wisconsin in two years.

Morgan said if Biden loses the election, people won’t blame his campaign manager as much as they blamed Clinton’s campaign manager, Robby Mook.

“No matter what, I don’t think people are going to blame Julie like people blame Robby Mook for Hillary. Because Hillary was supposed to win this,” the attorney said.

Morgan expressed his overall fear going into the general election, which is now seven months away.

“As my great-grandfather used to say, ‘I’m as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.’ Yes, hell yes,” Morgan said.
