It is a very real and common struggle for believers to experience seasons where prayer feels like drudgery and reading the Bible feels like a chore. The Bible does not hide this reality. In fact, the Scriptures diagnose exactly why human beings, even those saved by grace, drift into spiritual boredom or apathy. Here is how the Bible explains this spiritual dryness.
The most immediate cause of spiritual fatigue is the ongoing war between the renewed spirit and the fallen human nature, which the Bible calls the flesh. Spiritual disciplines like prayer and reading the Word require effort that the flesh naturally resists.
Jesus addressed this directly in the Garden of Gethsemane when His disciples fell asleep instead of praying with Him. Matthew 26:41, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Even when a believer has a genuine desire to seek the Lord, the physical and natural self tires easily and prefers comfort over spiritual discipline.
Spiritual boredom often happens not because a person actively rejects God, but because their attention is slowly crowded out by everyday life. When the mind is filled with worldly anxieties, ambitions, or entertainment, the things of God begin to look dull by comparison.
Jesus explained this in the parable of the sower, describing how the seed of the Word is choked out by competing interests. Mark 4:19, “And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.” When the “lusts of other things” enter in, reading the Bible feels like a chore because the heart’s affections have been temporarily captured by the world.
Routine is another major factor. It is possible to continue doing the right things in the Christian life while losing the relationship that makes those things meaningful. When prayer and reading become mechanical habits rather than acts of devotion, boredom inevitably follows.
In the book of Revelation, Jesus commended the church at Ephesus for their hard work and patience, but He issued a severe warning about their fading affection. Revelation 2:4, “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” They had not lost their theology or their habits, but they had lost their initial passion. Without love, the practices of faith become exhausting labor.
Sometimes believers become bored because they stop growing. If a person reads the same passages and prays the exact same prayers without seeking deeper understanding or obedience, they become spiritually stagnant.
The writer of Hebrews warned believers who had stopped maturing and lost their appetite for the deep truths of God. Hebrews 5:11, “Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.” When ears become “dull of hearing,” the Word of God no longer sounds exciting or transformative. It feels like repetitive noise, leading to apathy.
Because the Bible recognizes this tendency, it also provides the vocabulary to ask God for help when spiritual passion fades. King David, after a season of severe spiritual failure and distance from God, prayed for his joy to be renewed. Psalm 51:12, “Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”
The biblical response to spiritual boredom is to acknowledge the weakness of the flesh, repent of worldly distractions, and ask the Lord to restore the joy that makes seeking Him a delight rather than a duty.

I believe part of ‘apathy’ or boredom is due to God’s time not being our time. And there are days when, I at least, in my weakness have questioned whether or not God is even hearing our prayers. Does it matter? His plans, His way, His time. So sadly it feels like—does it really matter?
Deep down I know it does—but there are too many questions unanswered and too many wicked people and events to create doubt. Satan is good at his evil. This we know.
God please show up in a BIG WAY for ALL TO SEE your GLORY AND GREATNESS. Amen 🙏
I used to lose interest, not because I didn’t care or want to learn, but because I simply did not understand what was behind the words and stories of the New Testament. Then God seemed to be leading me toward the Torah books, the first 5 of the Old Testament. I resisted because I had tried that route and gave up every time because I simply could not understand why it was so important to knowing the New Testament. And it seemed boring. Then I was led by God to a web page that gave me new hope. It is InspiredScripture.com. It explained the symbolism and the why behind what God says and required of His people. It led me to a deep realization of God’s character and His deep caring for all humankind. I am still working through the Torah. I’ve reached Numbers, known as In the Wilderness in the Hebrew Bible. I am so excited by the transformation of my heart. I’m 4 years into this and I am more excited about Bible understanding than I have ever been. My prayers are heard, my love for God has grown, and I can’t be quiet about Him. He is my first love. Would it not revolutionize the church in America if this happened in every congregation on Sunday morning? No hype, no prep before a sermon, no stirring the pot so people are awake for the sermon, just an eager group of people getting recharged for another week of living for God and resisting the world. It doesn’t start with a group. It starts with YOU. Try it and transform your world.
