1. The God of All Comfort in Our Tribulation
In our suffering, it is easy to feel isolated, as though no one truly understands the depth of our pain. We might ask ourselves, Does God see me? Does He care? The Apostle Paul answers this with profound warmth in his second letter to the Corinthians:
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-5)
Notice how the Apostle describes God: He is not a distant, passive observer of our pain. He is the “Father of mercies” and the “God of all comfort.” Comfort is His very nature. There is no sorrow too deep, no anxiety too tangled, and no grief too heavy for Him to reach. He “comforteth us in all our tribulation”…not just some of it, but all of it.
But God’s comfort has a greater purpose. The pain we go through is never wasted. When we experience the soothing, restorative peace of God in our darkest hours, we are being equipped. We become wounded healers, capable of offering genuine, firsthand “comfort [to] them which are in any trouble.” When you survive the fire by the grace of God, you are able to reach back into the flames and help pull others through. Through Christ, our consolation does not just whisper to us; it abounds, overwhelming our suffering with His great love.
2. The Guarantee of God’s Faithfulness in Our Trials
When adversity strikes, it can feel like a custom-designed trap meant to destroy us. We might think, I can’t survive this. This is too much for any person to take. But God provides a boundary to our suffering and a promise of rescue:
“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, Who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)
First, remember that your struggle is not unique to you. The enemy wants you to believe you are the only one going through this, but these struggles are “common to man.” You are not alone in your humanity.
More importantly, look at the character of God: “but God is faithful.” People may fail you, circumstances will change, and your own strength will waver, but God’s faithfulness is an absolute guarantee. He is actively monitoring the pressure you face. He will not allow your trials, temptations, or tribulations to surpass what He has empowered you to handle.
He does not promise to always remove the storm immediately, but He promises to “make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” The “way to escape” is often not an exit out of the situation, but the grace, endurance, and wisdom to walk through it without being consumed. He provides the bridge over the chasm, the shelter in the downpour, and the endurance to take the next step.
3. Partnering with Limitless, Immeasurable Power
When we look at our problems, we often try to solve them using our own limited resources, imagination, and strength. We ask for tiny fixes because we have tiny vision. But God’s capabilities are infinitely larger than our understanding:
“Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above ALL that we ask or think, according to the Power that worketh in us, Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21)
Let those words sink in: “exceeding abundantly above ALL that we ask or think.” Think of the absolute best-case scenario for your current crisis…the miracle you are hoping for. God’s ability goes far beyond that. He is not limited by your lack of resources, your past mistakes, or the impossibilities of your circumstances.
And where is this vast, creative, miraculous power? It is not locked away in a distant heaven; it is “the Power that worketh in us.” Through the Holy Spirit, the same power that raised Christ from the dead is actively at work within your spirit, transforming you, sustaining you, and shifting the spiritual atmosphere around you. Because of this, we can trust Him to write a story through our lives that ultimately brings “glory… throughout all ages.”
4. Drawing on His Might, Not Your Own
In our human frailty, we often believe that we must be strong enough to handle everything on our own. But the Gospel is an invitation to lay down our self-sufficiency.
“be STRONG in the Lord, and in the POWER of His MIGHT.” (Ephesians 6:10)
This is a command, but it is also a massive relief. It does not say “be strong in yourself.” It tells us to be strong in the Lord. When you are at your weakest, that is when His strength can be most visible. The pressure is off your shoulders. Your job is not to generate enough might to fight the battle; your job is to surrender, abide, and armor yourself in His might.
5. Waiting Upon the Lord for Renewed Strength
When fatigue sets in, we feel like we are at the end of our rope. We find ourselves exhausted, weary, and ready to give up. In those moments, we must zoom out and remember who our God is:
“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” (Isaiah 40:28-29)
Our God never sleeps, never grows tired, and never runs out of answers. His understanding is infinitely beyond our grasp. He is the Creator of everything, and He specializes in giving “power to the faint” and “increas[ing] strength” to those who have none left.
But how do we receive this supernatural infusion of energy?
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)
To “wait upon the Lord” is not passive laziness; it is an active, expectant resting in His presence. It means looking to Him as our sole source of hope, trusting His timing, and refusing to rush ahead of His grace.
When you wait on Him, a divine exchange happens. You give Him your exhaustion, and He gives you His tireless strength. He will raise you up above your circumstances, enabling you to “mount up with wings as eagles.” You will find the grace to run the marathon of your life without wearying, and to walk through the long, monotonous trials without fainting.
If you are in tough circumstances today, do not look at the size of your storm. Look at the faithfulness of your God. Draw near to Him, and let His Word comfort, strengthen, and carry you through.
