God DEMANDS This From His Children, Even When Life Hurts: The Forgotten Power of Thankfulness

By Dave Blaze

There is perhaps no clearer mark of a heart that truly recognizes God than thankfulness. Throughout Scripture, thanksgiving is not presented merely as good manners, positive thinking, or something Christians practice when life is pleasant. God commands His children to give thanks because gratitude acknowledges who God is, what He has done, and our complete dependence upon Him.

The Psalmist declares:

“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
Psalm 136:1 (KJV)

Notice the reason given for thanksgiving. We give thanks because “he is good.” Therefore, our thanksgiving ultimately rests not upon whether our circumstances are good, but upon the unchanging goodness of God.

That distinction changes everything.

God Wants His Children to Be Thankful

The Apostle Paul makes God’s will remarkably plain:

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

The verse does not say to give thanks only when everything goes well. It says “In every thing give thanks.”

There will be days of abundance and days of need. There will be victories and disappointments, health and sickness, companionship and loneliness, answers and seasons in which God seems silent.

Yet God’s character has not changed.

Thanksgiving in difficult circumstances is therefore an extraordinary act of faith. We are declaring, Lord, I may not understand what is happening, but I still trust You.

Job demonstrated this kind of faith after tremendous loss:

“The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
Job 1:21 (KJV)

Job’s circumstances changed drastically. Job’s God did not.

That is the foundation of biblical thanksgiving.

The Frightening Contrast: The Unthankful Heart

Scripture also presents the opposite condition, and the contrast is sobering.

Paul describes humanity’s rebellion against God in Romans:

“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”
Romans 1:21 (KJV)

Notice that among the characteristics of rebellion against God appears this seemingly simple phrase:

“neither were thankful.”

Why is unthankfulness so serious?

Because ingratitude receives God’s blessings while refusing to acknowledge the Giver.

The unthankful heart gradually begins treating God’s mercy as something deserved. God’s provision becomes expected. God’s patience is overlooked. Life itself becomes taken for granted.

Paul later describes perilous times:

“For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,”
2 Timothy 3:2 (KJV)

Again, “unthankful” appears among characteristics fundamentally contrary to godliness.

There is a spiritual connection here. Pride says, I deserve what I have. Gratitude says, Everything I possess ultimately comes by the mercy and provision of God.

Thank God Before the Circumstances Change

Perhaps the deepest form of thanksgiving occurs when nothing around us presently gives us an earthly reason to rejoice.

Habakkuk gives us one of Scripture’s most beautiful examples:

“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:”
“Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”
Habakkuk 3:17-18 (KJV)

Everything surrounding Habakkuk could fail, yet God remained worthy of praise.

There is the secret.

Biblical thanksgiving does not require us to pretend suffering is pleasant. It requires us to remember that suffering does not remove God from His throne.

We can thank God when we understand.

We can thank Him when we do not.

We can thank Him after the answer arrives.

And we can thank Him while we are still waiting.

Enter His Presence With Thanksgiving

Psalm 100 gives us the beautiful picture:

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his…
