MIDTERM MANIA: Endorsement Tests and Runoff Battles Hit Louisiana and Colorado!

By George Magazine

Here is the consolidated update on the upcoming battles.

Saturday, June 27: Louisiana Partisan Runoffs

Louisiana voters head to the polls tomorrow to settle the closed party primary runoffs. Remember, the top two candidates from the May 16 primary advanced after no one secured 50% of the vote (which ousted incumbent Senator Bill Cassidy).

The U.S. Senate Republican Matchup

  • Julia Letlow: The current U.S. Representative from Louisiana’s 5th District. She holds the official endorsement from Donald Trump as well as the backing of Governor Jeff Landry and the vast majority of the state’s Republican establishment.
  • John Fleming: The former State Treasurer and former U.S. Representative is running as a hardline conservative outsider, attempting to outflank Letlow on the right.
  • Status: With both Trump’s endorsement and heavy institutional backing, Letlow enters tomorrow’s runoff with a massive organizational advantage.

The U.S. Senate Democratic Matchup

  • Jamie Davis: A farmer and Tensas Parish police juror. Davis holds the official endorsement of the Louisiana Democratic Party and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
  • Gary Crockett: A military veteran and business owner from New Orleans.

Tuesday, June 30: Colorado State Primaries

Colorado voters will lock in their party nominees this coming Tuesday.

The Governor’s Race (Democratic Primary)

Because incumbent Jared Polis is term-limited, this is a heavyweight battle for the open executive seat.

  • Phil Weiser: The current Colorado Attorney General. Weiser is positioning himself as the candidate with deep state-level focus and just shattered primary fundraising records.
  • Michael Bennet: The current U.S. Senator. Bennet is leveraging his national profile and Washington experience.
  • News & Polling: A late-June poll shows Weiser pulling ahead of Bennet (41% to 34%), turning the final days into a fierce battle to capture undecided voters.

The Governor’s Race (Republican Primary)

Three major candidates qualified for the ballot:

  • Barbara Kirkmeyer: A sitting State Senator with deep agricultural roots and heavy establishment backing from former statewide officials.
  • Scott Bottoms: A State Representative and lead pastor aiming to consolidate the staunchly conservative legislative base.
  • Victor Marx: A U.S. Marine veteran and ANOTHER tired ministry leader running as a political outsider with backing from national figures like Michael Flynn.
  • Trump Endorsement Status: Trump has not issued an endorsement in this primary.

Colorado Congressional District 4 (Republican)

  • Lauren Boebert: After abandoning her old district to run in the much safer 4th District, Boebert faced heavy local criticism. However, she retains Donald Trump’s official endorsement.
  • Status: Because the filing deadlines passed before any serious coordinated opposition could mount after Trump publicly voiced frustrations with her, Boebert is running unopposed in Tuesday’s primary. Her path to the nomination is locked.

Strategic Consequences on the Vote

For Republicans:

The Louisiana runoff will demonstrate whether a unified frontcombining the Trump endorsement with the state’s traditional institutional machine (Letlow)can easily crush a populist outsider challenge (Fleming). In Colorado, the GOP is attempting to find a gubernatorial candidate capable of breaking the Democratic stronghold in November, but the lack of a unifying endorsement has left the primary fractured.

For Democrats:

In Colorado, the Bennet vs. Weiser matchup is a classic proxy war between national Washington experience and localized state governance. The winner will be heavily favored in November. In Louisiana, Democrats are utilizing the runoff to consolidate their base, though the eventual nominee will face a steep uphill battle against the Republican victor in the general election.
