Republicans slam Mamdani’s ID requirement for city-owned grocery stores

“Our RFP [Request for Proposals] makes it very clear that this is a program for New Yorkers to be able to put food on the table, not a program for people to be able to make a quick buck through reselling,” Mamdani said.

The request for proposals lets qualified grocers apply by Oct. 16 to run the future municipal grocery stores. The selected operator for each location will be responsible for daily operations, such as merchandising and staffing.

Billionaire Elon Musk, who aligns with the Republican Party, was among the first figures to point out the difference in expectations between accessing the grocery stores and voting.

“Oh, the irony is too much,” Musk posted on X. Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) took the tech mogul’s criticism a step further.

“It’s not just ironic, it’s hypocritical!” Scott wrote. “Mamdani’s going to require an ID check for his grocery stores, but thinks it’s racist to require one for federal elections?!? We HAVE to pass the SAVE America Act to end this corruption!”

At an Oval Office event on Monday, President Donald Trump answered a question from the press on New York’s plan to require IDs for grocery stores.

“I wish they’d have an ID to access the voting booth,” Trump said of New York City’s leaders. “You know, they don’t want to access the voting booth with any identification. We want voter ID, and we want proof of citizenship.”

Trump’s political operation issued a similar statement in support of the GOP-backed election-integrity measure.

“You need ID for Mamdani’s grocery stores but not to vote in elections,” Trump War Room posted. “This is exactly why Congress must pass the SAVE AMERICA ACT!”

Spencer Pratt, the former Republican candidate for Los Angeles mayor, made fiery comments about Mamdani’s plan.

“Racist Commie Mamdani is going to make you show ID in his markets. You want your government-subsidized arugula? Show your papers! Ask for ID to vote? BIGOT!!!” Pratt said. “Are you starting to realize what disingenuous lying buffoons these commies are?”

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a self-described apolitical businessman whose company maintains an office in Manhattan, also weighed in on the hypocrisy.

“So you need a valid ID to shop at [Mamdani’s] government grocery stores to make sure the system [isn’t] taken advantage of,” Portnoy wrote. “But the same people who love this idea will also scream racism if you say you need a valid ID to vote so the system [doesn’t] get taken advantage of. Hypocrites man…Either you should be for no ID for both or ID for both. But if you are split [then] you are prob a fraud.”

Multiple national GOP accounts on social media and Republican lawmakers similarly criticized the floated ID requirement for grocery stores.

So far, the Mamdani administration has not committed to an official plan for verifying whether shoppers are New York City residents. That still needs to be worked out as the city moves closer toward opening its first grocery location in the Bronx by the end of 2027. The mayor’s goal is to have all five stores running by the end of his first term in January 2030.
